KARACHI: Prices of various varieties of rice have declined by Rs2 to Rs10 per kg, while supply of sugar from the mills has resulted in some stability in its wholesale rates. A wholesale rice trader said that the price of a normal variety fell to Rs48 from Rs50 per kg, while Basmati (ponia) rice is now available at Rs45 as against Rs50 earlier.

He said the new 386 Punjab variety now sells at Rs35 as compared to Rs40 per kg, Kernal Basmati price fell to Rs75 from Rs80 per kg, while Kernal special Basmati rate has declined to Rs90 from Rs100 per kg. A retailer said that Kernal Basmati super rate is now tagged at Rs120 as compared to Rs125 per kg. Irri-6 price

fell to Rs24 from Rs26 per kg while Basmati sela rate plunged to Rs95 from Rs115 per kg. Shopkeepers said that the prices had declined owing to some declining trend in rice exports from July onwards. As a result ample supplies of various varieties of rice had arrived in the local markets. Figures of Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) gave a dismal picture of rice export. Pakistan s total rice exports (basmati and others) fell by 33.4 per cent in value during July-Oct 2009, fetching only $537 million (809,872 tons) as compared to $806 million (787,222 tons) in the same period of 2008. Basmati exports fell by 51 per cent in value and 33 per cent in quantity to $240 million (228,991 tons) in July-Oct, 2009 as compared to $488 million (342,350 tons) in the same period of 2008. Exports of other varieties stood at $296 million (580,881 tons) in July-Oct 2009, as compared to $318 million (444,872 tons) in the corresponding period of 2008. However, vice-chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap), Rafiq Suleman said exports had been going up. He claimed that during July-Nov 2009, non-basmati exports went up by 32 per cent to 993,617 tons as compared to 751,770 tons in the same period of 2008. Basmati exports, however, went down slightly by six per cent to 372,686 tons during July-Nov, 2009 as compared to 398,327 tons in the same period of last year. Rafiq added that as exports are picking up, total exports of rice in the current financial year is likely to achieve target of $2.2 billion while in the last fiscal year, exports fetched $2.04 billion. Sugar The wholesale sugar price is now quoted at Rs51-52 per kg as compared to Rs58 per kg a month back but the retailers are not ready to pass on this impact to the consumers. Majority of the retailers are charging Rs60 per kg in many areas, while some are demanding even more than Rs60 per kg. Wholesalers said if the supply of sugar from the sugar mills improves further in coming days, the rates would further fall.

KARACHI: Persisting demand for dollars did not allow the rupee to shed its losses against the greenback on the currency market on Friday, dealers said. On the interbank market, the rupee shed five paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 82.90 and 82.95, they said. Market sources said that the weaker rupee is good to attract the buyers in the international market, in the meantime, they said that the rupee may trim its losses as a result of easy supply of the US currency.

During the final Asian session dollar held steady above this week's seven-week low against yen and kept a firmer tone against euro as investors hunkered down to await US non-farm payrolls later in the day. The market is uncertain how dollar will react to the August non-farm payrolls report due at 1230 GMT, after it lost its toehold above 93.00 yen at the start of this week and hit its lowest since mid-July just above 91.90 on Thursday.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee retained its levels against dollar for the second day for buying and selling at 82.70 and 82.80, dealers said. Meanwhile the rupee gained 20 paisa in terms of euro for buying and selling at Rs 117.55 and Rs 118.05, they said.

On the interbank market the rupee extended its gains, rising 22 paisa versus dollar for buying at 82.70 and rose by 23 paisa for selling at 82.75, dealers said. In the third Asian trading session yen retreated from a seven-week high against dollar and euro, pushed back after economic growth in Australia supported the case for an early rise in rates and powered the Australian dollar higher.

Most regional shares fell as concerns about the financial sector outweighed data showing growth in the US manufacturing sector and dragged Wall Street down, sending the low-yielding yen up against riskier currencies initially.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee managed to gain 30 paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 82.70 and 82.80, dealers said. The rupee also picked up 20 paisa versus euro for buying and selling at Rs 117.15 and Rs 117.65, they said.

KARACHI: The rupee gained sharply on the interbank market on Wednesday, it, however, crossed the barrier of 83 on the open market, analysts said. On the interbank market the rupee managed to gain 18 paisa against dollar for buying at 82.32 and 21 paisa for selling at 82.34, they said.

In the meantime, the rupee showed further decline, touching 83 low level in terms of the US currency, they said. Falling value of rupee on the open market is giving an impression that the rupee may lose further on the interbank market in the near future, they added. They said that slide in rupee's value is benefiting for the textile and rice exporters. It looks that the rupee may continue to fall this year also after an erosion of 30 percent value of the rupee during the last fiscal year, they added. In the third Asian trade yen maintained a soft tone, after falling the previous day when upbeat results from Goldman Sachs and Intel boosted investor risk appetite for stocks and modest hopes for an economic recovery. But some analysts said that the reaction from the currency and stock markets could have been stronger, underlining caution ahead of more earnings results and data.

Open Market Rates: The rupee lost 40 paisa versus dollar for buying at 82.70 and 30 paisa for selling at 83.00, dealers said. The rupee followed same pattern against euro losing 49 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 114.54 and Rs 115.54, they said.

KARACHI: Bears dominated on the currency market on Tuesday as the rupee continued downward drift against dollar on both the interbank and open market, analysts said. On the interbank market, the rupee tended lower versus dollar, shedding 10 paisa for buying and selling at 82.50 and 82.55, they added.

In the second Asian trade yen was steady against dollar and euro, recovering from earlier losses, as investors braced for earnings reports including one from Goldman Sachs as well as economic data in the United States. The yen initially slipped on hopes that US financial sector earnings would be better than previously thought but it climbed back as investors played it safe before the figures are announced amid persistent worries over the global economy.

Open Market Rates: The rupee held its overnight level against dollar for buying at 82.30 while it shed 10 paisa for selling at 82.70, dealers said. Meanwhile the rupee maintained its overnight level in relation to euro for buying and selling at Rs 114.05 and Rs 115.05, they said.

KARACHI: The rupee has failed to come out of weak spells on rising demand by the importers, falling 25 paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 82.00 and 82.05, dealers said on the interbank market on Friday.

Increasing demand by importers, forced the rupee to come down versus dollar and it is most likely it may not be able to resist sharp losses for the near future, they said. In the final Asian session yen held steady, holding below the week's peaks with investors cautious as the US corporate earnings season gets under way, while euro lost ground against dollar and yen.

The yen hit a five-month high against dollar this week and surged to two-month highs against euro and Australian dollar as investors unwound bets in riskier assets that they made using the low-yielding Japanese currency.

Open Market Rates: The rupee drifted lower against the US currency, losing 20 paisa for buying at 82.00 and 25 paisa for selling at 82.30, dealers said. The rupee followed the same pattern in relation to euro, falling 46 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 112.84 and Rs 113.84, they said.

KARACHI: Bearish sentiment persisted on the interbank market on Thursday as the rupee fell five paisa more against dollar for buying and selling at 81.75 and 81.80, dealers said. Strong demand for dollars kept the rupee in drifting position and it appeared that if buying pressure continues, the rupee may touch the mark of 82, they said.

In the fourth Asian trade yen slid, falling from a five-month high against dollar and a two-month peak versus euro hit the previous day when doubts about the health of the global economy spurred risk aversion. The dollar and euro both fell more than two percent against yen on Wednesday, posting their sharpest one-day drops since March, according to data from trading platform EBS.

Open Market Rates: The rupee moved both ways versus dollar as it lost five paisa for buying at 81.80 while it gained the same amount for selling at 82.05, dealers said. The rupee maintained its surge versus euro rising 19 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 112.38 and Rs 113.38, they said.

KARACHI: Bearish sentiment was witnessed on the interbank market on Friday as the rupee shed two paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 81.52 and 81.57, dealers said. Persisting demand for dollars did not allow the rupee come out the weak spells in terms of the US currency, they said.

In the Asian final session euro struggled back from its lowest levels in a week, after a wave of sell orders compounded losses made on bleak US jobs numbers, and it found support as some investors judged it may have slipped too far. Dealers said euro hit stop-loss sell orders around $1.3980, and possible hedge fund selling, in the crossover between late US trade and the start of the Asian day, sending it down to $1.3927 on electronic trading platform EBS.

Open Market Rates: The rupee fell versus dollar dropping 15 paisa for buying at 81.40 and 20 paisa for selling at 81.60, dealers said. The rupee, however, gained 64 paisa versus euro for buying and selling at Rs 112.98 and Rs 113.98, they said.

In the third Asian trade dollar steadied holding gains made the previous day after an unexpected fall in US consumer morale cooled optimism about an economic recovery, prompting investors to seek the safety of the greenback. The Bank of Japan's June tankan corporate survey showed on Wednesday that big manufacturers' sentiment pulled back from a record low hit three months ago, although the improvement was smaller than forecast.

KARACHI: Firm trend was witnessed on the currency market on Tuesday as the rupee resisted erosion in its value at the end of the fiscal year 2008-09, experts said. On the interbank market the rupee gained five paisa against dollar for buying at 81.35 while it retained its level for selling at 81.45, they said.

In the second Asian trade dollar and yen slipped as higher oil, gains in share prices and better-than-expected sentiment in the euro zone boosted hopes of a global recovery, helping investor risk appetite. Currencies of commodity producers such as the Australian dollar rose as oil prices surged above $73 per barrel to hover near an eight-month high.

Open Market Rates: The rupee gained 15 paisa versus dollar for buying at 81.35, it, however, shed five paisa for selling at 81.65, they said. The rupee lost 86 paisa in terms of euro for buying and selling at Rs 113.56 and 114.56, they said.

KARACHI: Slight improvement was seen on the interbank market on Monday as the rupee gained five paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 81.40 and 81.45, experts said. In the first Asian trading day dollar regained some ground after falling broadly late last week on a renewed call by China for a super-sovereign reserve currency, placing higher-risk currencies such as the Australian dollar under pressure.

But activity was subdued ahead of significant data this week, including US employment numbers on Thursday, which investors are awaiting to see if a months-long rally in riskier assets such as commodity-linked currencies and shares is sustainable.

Open Market Rates: The rupee showed no change against dollar for buying at 81.50 and selling at 81.60, they said. The rupee, however, gained 80 paisa versus euro for buying at Rs 112.70 and rose by 30 paisa for selling at Rs 113.70, they said.

Inflows of dollars helped the rupee to resist sharp decline against the US currency and it is likely that the rupee may tackle the position when the greenback starts surging as a result of strong demand by importers. In the meantime, it looks that the rupee may touch the low at 82.00 in the short-run. According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the country's foreign exchange reserves rose by 130 million dollars to 11.77 billion dollars in the week that ended on June 20, compared with 11.64 billion dollars the previous week.

KARACHI: Rates moved both ways on the currency market on Thursday as supply position was matching with demand, money experts said. On the interbank market the rupee recovered 13 paisa in relation to the dollar for buying at 81.42 and 14 paisa for selling at 81.46, dealers said. Dollar supply was good which helped the rupee to look ahead in terms of dollar, they added.

Amid fourth Asian trade session dollar edged off stronger levels hit after the Federal Reserve meeting, while yen fell as the market weighed up whether to resume rallies in riskier assets. The Fed kept to its debt buyback programme and signalled it was less concerned about deflation, but it also said inflation would remain subdued for some time and interest rates would stay low for an extended period.

Open Market Rates: The rupee failed to retain its overnight level versus dollar, losing 10 paisa for buying at 81.40 and selling at 81.70, they said. The rupee gained 70 paisa against euro for buying at Rs 112.55 and Rs 113.55 for selling, they said.

KARACHI: As a result of strong demand for dollars on the interbank market on Wednesday, the rupee fell sharply against the US currency and may breach the barrier of 82 in the near future, money experts said. On the interbank market the rupee lost 23 paisa in relation to dollar for buying at 81.55 and 25 paisa for selling at 81.60, dealers said.

To clear the oil payments, the importers' thrust increased for dollar, buying in a big way in last days of the final closing session of the out-going fiscal year, analysts said. The payments for oil are so high and all at a time when the prices were touching the high mark of 147 dollars per barrel, they remembered. As a result of increased rush for dollars, it is most likely that the greenback may hit the high mark at 82 in the coming days, they added. In these days the importers are buying above 50-70 million dollars per day to meet their payment requirements, they said. On the third day of Asian trade dollar sat on steep losses, after tumbling sharply against euro and other majors, as the market got set for the Federal Reserve to dampen expectations for higher interest rates.

Policy makers at the Fed began their two-day meeting on Tuesday and many expect they will want to play down expectations of higher interest rates that have built in the market, for fear these will choke an economic recovery.

Open Market Rates: Against the direction on the interbank market, the rupee gained versus dollar, rising 10 paisa for buying at 81.30 and 30 paisa for selling at 81.60, they said.
